Philips to set up 5 more lactation centers across India

MUMBAI: Philips India, a leading health technology company, in collaboration with PATH, an international Non Profit Health Organization, today launched the Comprehensive Lactation Centre (CLMC) at Lokmanya Tilak Municipal General Hospital. With the intent to reduce neonatal mortality and morbidity, Philips India and PATH will be collaborating in setting 5 CLMCs across India.

For India to reduce under-five child mortality rates, it is critical to scale up the adoption of breastfeeding. Today, the lack of access to breast milk leaves infants highly vulnerable to diseases and poor health. A Lancet study reports that in resource-limited settings, such as in India, the risk of death in a non-breastfed child is six times more than a non-breastfed child.

Commenting on the launch, ADA Ratnam, President- Personal Health, Philips Indian subcontinent, said, “The launch of these centers highlights Philips’ commitment to improving lives through meaningful innovations. We are totally committed to the cause of strengthening the breastfeeding ecosystem in India. Our collaboration with PATH will go a long way towards ensuring high quality donor milk access to lakhs of deprived babies, giving them the best chance to grow up to be healthy adults.”

Explaining the innovation Neeraj Jain, Country Director Path said, “CLMCs collect, test, pasteurize, and store safe, donated milk from lactating mothers and provide it to infants in need, ensuring that even if babies cannot be directly breastfed, they can still receive human milk as soon as possible. As part of integrated new-born care, the facility maintains the highest ethical standards and aims to become the gold standard in creating a supportive ecosystem for good breastfeeding practices and by providing safe and high quality donor milk to infants in need of it.”

On the side lines of the launch, Pooja Baid, Business Head – Health & Wellness, Philips Indian Subcontinent, said, “The benefits of breast milk are immeasurable and the new CLMC facility will help families ensure that premature and sick babies get the best possible start to life. We are confident that together with PATH we will raise awareness around the benefits of breast milk and will assist in making donor milk being made available more widely to babies and mothers across the country.” Philips and Path will launch 4 more such centres across India, to ensure access to breast milk and better breast feeding practices.
