Acute Shortage of skilled welding professionals to dampens India’s Infra Sector

January 2020 : Today Over 70 % of manufacturing activities in the country are being carried out in the Small, Medium and Micro sectors of the country. Over 6 Million such Industries exist in the country where welding is the major activity, Plays a very important and Vital role in the country’s, growth, development, economy and Exports. However, these sectors have a major drawback as they are unable to keep in pace with the changing technology needs and the skill requirement to meet the Global challenges.
The Indian Institute of welding in its endeavor to promote the Welding science and Technology in the country has decided to step in and assist these identified sectors to meet the challenges so that They can be able to take on the Industry 4.0 and meet the ZED requirements and compete globally. The IIW India the only Country member from India in The International Institute of Welding is organizing a 4 day International Welding Congress on the Theme of “Advanced Welding Technology & Quality Systems for Developing Economies” is designed to answer the needs of the Industries. Concurrently the India’s Premier welding Exclusive Welding Exhibition the WELDINDIA from 6th February to 9th February is also being organized in CIDCO Convention Centre at Vashi Navi Mumbai.
Mr R. Srinivasan Past president of the Institute and the Co chairman of the National Organizing committee stressed in his address to the media on 23rd January that The institute has teamed up with the Ministry of Skill development and with the various sector skill council and organizations such as CGSC, NSDC, IISSSC , and industries are working jointly to identify the shortcomings in terms of the Skills and the gaps that exists today . The various needs such as Technological Gaps, Knowledge level of the Workers, Certification levels, R&D requirements, and capital investment support are the areas that needs immediate attention and assistance to make these sectors stronger players of the Indian industry.
While addressing the media, on sidelines of announcement Media Conference on WeldIndia 2020,Mr.R Srinivasan, spokesperson and Past President of IIW expressed reservations about timely execution and completion of adding 90,000 megawatt power generation capacities and creating new construction assets of Rs 52 lakh crore due to insufficient skilled workforce.
The national mission of building 20 kilometers of new highways each day is already falling behind. The ‘Make-in-India’ campaign has surged the growth prospects of the manufacturing sector but hue and cry of perennial skilled labour shortage have become vociferous in the construction, automobile, power, and defense sectors.
Skilled welding professionals at all levels; pipe and plate welders, supervisors and welding engineers continue to be in short supply.
The union government’s skill development machinery which targets to skill over 500 million Indians by 2022 must work to overcome the severe shortage in employable skills of the Indian workforce.
IIW has offered to partner with the union and state government machinery to up-skill Indian youth and overcome the shortage of competency-certified welding workforce.
“We are keenly soliciting participation of bureaucrats and public sector companies in the International Congress 2020 (IC 2020) and Weld India 2020 Expo being held in February 2020 at Mumbai.
Major Corporates including L & T,Tata Steel,etc are participating in this Mega Event.The IIW will host a daylong session on Role of Welding in Urban and Public Infrastructure – Bridges”, said Kamal Shah – Chairman of Mumbai Branch, IIW.
“Experts from oil and gas, thermal, nuclear, defence, automobiles across the world are being invited. IIW-India plans to invite participation from senior officials of Public Works Department and Urban Local Bodies of Maharashtra, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Goa, and Karnataka. IIW is also keen to seek participation of National Highway Authority, Indian and Konkan Railway officials,” he stated.
During the Mega show, Weld India 2020 – Welding Technology Expo which is to be held from February 7 to 9 February 2020 in Vashi.
IIW plans to make the Indian welding fraternity sit together with government officials and administrators of the state-run ITI’s to update their curriculum, match their syllabus and facilitate training with Industry participation.
“IIW branches are making a presentation to students to consider the possibility of a career in welding. The compensation for certified welders and welding technologists is very healthy, annual packages starting from 3 lakh to Rs 40 lakh,” Shah said.
“Many industries want to optimize their capital investments and rely on welders and welding professionals who have the ability to rebuild fairly old and worn equipment. Such skills have become a rarity and are in great demand. If you dedicate yourself to the welding industry, you will never be out of a job,” added Mr.Kamal Shah.
In the three-day Mega event IIW India will be deliberating in details and identify the shortcomings that prevents the small and Medium Industries capability to meet the challenges. The Institute has invited Experts from countries such as Australia, Canada, USA, China, Brazil, Netherlands, Austria and Germany and from Europe and Experts from Various Important organization of the country to prepare a workable action plan and Implement the same. IIW India has placed a project team to develop this sector so that The Industries can bank up on IIW for their Improvement in the Welding skill and the technical support requirements.
Over 150 technical papers will be presented by authors from 22 countries. The sheer Presence of Leading Experts in the field of welding will be a greater interaction place for the Industries and to exchange the ideas. 75 manufacturers of the welding Products, Various Training Bodies, Educational institutes are participating in the Welding Exhibition will be showcasing the latest technological equipment and welding solutions which are user friendly and will assure you to reach the objective of Meeting the ZED requirements. Over 4000 Visitors from Maharashtra, Gujarat and from other states will be taking part in the exhibition.
IIW India is prepared to assist the Indian Industries welding needs to meet the global challenges that face the country and build a strong Nation.
