Nitori, Japan’s Largest Furniture Retailer, Inaugurates First Store in India at R City Mall, Mumbai

Nitori, Japan’s largest furniture and home furnishing retail chain, celebrated the inauguration of its first store in India at the R City Mall in Ghatkopar, Mumbai. The new store is spread across a 32,000 sq. ft. carpet area and offers ample room for shopping and browsing. With this launch, Nitori enters the USD 23.9 billion Indian home furnishing market (Ken Research), with an aim to enhance homes with high-quality furniture and decor at affordable prices. The brand’s debut in India is part of its global expansion strategy of operating 3,000 stores globally by 2032. The store’s inaugural event occurred in the 1.2 million sq. ft. R City, which hosts over 350 premium brands and attracts 1 million monthly visitors, providing the Nitori store with excellent exposure and visibility. The event began with a ribbon-cutting ceremony followed by a cultural program and a special showcase of the Nitori collection.
Notable speakers at the inauguration included Masanori Takeda, Executive Vice President in Charge of Overseas Businesses, General Manager, Global Merchandising Division, and General Manager, Global Sales Promotion Office, Nitori Holdings Co., Ltd. He commented on the launch, saying, “This store is special because with it we enter into the Indian furniture and home furnishing industry, which is an important market. Above all, it will allow us to advance our mission, ‘To enrich the homes of people all over the world,’ as we cater to the unique needs of Indian homes. The Nitori Store at R City will feature an assortment of premium home furnishing items for different categories, including the living room, kitchen, and bedroom. Customers will find a diverse product range, including sofas, dining tables, kitchen cabinets, beds, curtains, carpets, bedding, dishes, and other interior goods in one place.
Nitori Group is working on plans to open 280 stores by 2032. The brand is particularly keen on expanding its presence in Asia, with plans to establish around 100 stores outside Japan by the end of FY2024. The brand has not disclosed any details but has plans for its Indian division.
