Mumbai Diabetes Care Foundation Hosted Awareness Event on Obesity and Diabetes

Mumbai, November 17, 2025 – Mumbai Diabetes Care Foundation organized a landmark event to spread awareness about diabetes and obesity. The theme of the event, “Step Towards Fighting Obesity and Diabetes,” underscores the urgent need for preventive care and lifestyle interventions.
Obesity, being a major contributor to diabetes, is rising at an alarming rate due to sedentary lifestyles and poor dietary habits. This dual epidemic poses a serious threat to public health, making it essential for healthcare professionals to lead the charge in prevention, early screening, and holistic care.
As part of this initiative, doctors committed to 14 pledges, including treating obesity as a chronic disease, promoting physical activity, improving liver and oral health, addressing mental well-being, and making India a global leader in metabolic excellence.
Dr. Manoj Chawla, Director & Consultant Diabetologist, Lina Diabetes Care & Mumbai Diabetes Research Centre, stated: “Diabetes and obesity are not isolated conditions but deeply interconnected drivers of advanced metabolic disease. Given the specific genetic predisposition of the Indian demographic, this population faces a disproportionately high risk for severe diabetes-related complications, including accelerated cardiovascular disease, nephropathy, and fatty liver disease.
Dr Purvi Chawla Consultant Diabetologist Lina Diabetes Care Centre added: “For decades, individuals managing obesity and diabetes faced a limited spectrum of weight loss options, ranging from lifestyle modifications (diet and exercise) to invasive surgical interventions. Today, a significant paradigm shift has occurred, marked by a growing clinical consensus on utilizing pharmacotherapy, such as semaglutide. ”.”

This strategy is essential for addressing the unique metabolic challenges—such as non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD)—that frequently arise from the prevalent ‘thin-fat phenotype.”
By taking these pledges, doctors are setting a powerful example and reinforcing the message that prevention and education are the keys to a healthier future. MDCF aims to make India the global torchbearer in metabolic excellence, and this initiative is a step towards that vision.
