Apollo Micro Systems Acquires Stake in ShauryAstra Defence Systems to Pursue Unsolved and Futuristic Defence Challenges Under Dr. V. K. Saraswat
New associate company to develop complete weapon systems, long-range systems, unmanned platforms and advanced defence technologies under the leadership of former DRDO chief and Secretary, Department of Defence R&D
Apollo Micro Systems Limited (BSE: 540879, NSE: APOLLO) has strengthened its long-term commitment to indigenous defence technology with an investment in ShauryAstra Defence Systems Private Limited, a newly incorporated technology and development company established to pursue some of the most challenging, unsolved and futuristic operational problem statements of the Indian Armed Forces.
Apollo Micro Systems has subscribed to 3,400 equity shares of ShauryAstra Defence Systems Private Limited at a face value of ₹10 per share for an aggregate consideration of ₹34,000, representing 34% of the paid-up equity share capital of the company. ShauryAstra, incorporated on August 21, 2026, is now an associate of Apollo Micro Systems.
The new entity has been created with a dedicated mandate to undertake the research, design and development of complete weapon systems, long-range systems, unmanned platforms and allied advanced defence technologies, with a particular emphasis on addressing operational requirements for which indigenous solutions do not yet exist, as well as anticipating the technology and capability gaps that will emerge on tomorrow’s battlefields.
ShauryAstra will pursue this mission under the scientific leadership and guidance of Dr. V. K. Saraswat, one of India’s most accomplished missile scientists and a former Secretary, Department of Defence R&D, Director General of DRDO and Scientific Advisor to the Raksha Mantri.
Dr. Saraswat has played a pivotal role in some of India’s most consequential strategic technology programmes. He steered the development, production and induction of the Prithvi missile, and has been associated with the development of Dhanush, Prahaar, Agni-5, India’s two-tier Ballistic Missile Defence programme, the Light Combat Aircraft Tejas and the nuclear submarine INS Arihant. He also played an important role in developing indigenous technologies at a time when India faced significant restrictions on access to critical defence technologies.
The establishment of ShauryAstra also carries forward a significant legacy from the formative years of India’s indigenous missile programme.
Dr. V. K. Saraswat’s professional association with Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam dates back to the early years of India’s integrated missile development efforts. DRDO records identify Saraswat among the scientists and former project directors who were close associates of Dr. Kalam from the early 1980s, during the development of the country’s Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme.
Contemporary accounts have described Saraswat as one of the young missile scientists who came under Kalam’s leadership during the programme, with Saraswat focusing particularly on propulsion. Saraswat himself has spoken of Kalam as his mentor and guru, and after the successful Agni-V test in 2012, he called Dr. Kalam to seek his blessings, describing Kalam as the person who had shown the path that his generation of scientists followed.
That scientific lineage provides a distinctive foundation for ShauryAstra: the experience of a generation that helped build India’s indigenous missile capability is being channelled into a new private-sector organisation whose mandate is to identify and solve the next generation of defence challenges.
For Apollo Micro Systems, the investment represents a natural extension of its more than four-decade journey in the defence electronics sector. Over the years, it has built capabilities across mission-critical defence electronics, avionics, rugged computing, fuzes, actuators, weapon electronics, precision manufacturing and system integration.
ShauryAstra has been structured to complement these established capabilities by functioning as a dedicated technology and development arm, with a focus on system architecture, advanced design, research and development and complete-platform development, while leveraging the Apollo Group’s existing engineering, manufacturing and integration infrastructure for industrialisation and production.
The model is intended to allow Apollo Micro Systems to move beyond the development of individual subsystems and participate more substantially in the creation of complete indigenous weapon systems and platforms.
The opportunity is particularly relevant at a time when the Indian defence ecosystem is increasingly opening opportunities for private-sector companies to participate as development and production partners, prime development agencies and lead system integrators under initiatives and frameworks including Make-II, iDEX and Development cum Production Partner programmes.
