46-Year-Old Man Commits Suicide Alleging Harassment by MCC Bank Chairman Anil Lobo; Calls for CBI and ED Probe
Mangalore, December 17 – In a shocking incident, a 46-year-old man, identified as Manohar Pereira, reportedly ended his life, alleging financial harassment and mental torture by MCC Bank Chairman Anil Lobo. Pereira, who had been battling financial distress, left behind a video accusing Lobo of relentless pressure related to a loan he had taken from the bank to construct his home.
The house, which remained incomplete due to the financial struggles Pereira faced post-COVID-19, was eventually seized by the bank. According to sources, Pereira was not only struggling with financial losses but also health complications, including heart disease and a paralysis-related leg injury.
The Kankanady Rural Police have initiated an investigation into the case, with Pereira’s video and allegations forming a key part of the inquiry.
A History of Alleged Malpractices
This is not the first time Anil Lobo and the management of MCC Bank have come under scrutiny. In July 2022, the Cyber, Economic, and Narcotics (CEN) Crime Police filed a First Information Report (FIR) against Lobo and six others following allegations of corruption, money laundering, and violation of RBI and Karnataka Cooperative Societies (KCR) Act norms.
The case, brought forward by senior stakeholders including social activist Gerard Towers, highlighted serious malpractices such as bribery, illegal property confiscation, and non-compliance with banking regulations. Despite these charges, little progress has been made, further fueling anger among affected stakeholders.
Suspicious Property Seizures
Rumours abound in Mangalore that Anil Lobo, in alleged collusion with a prominent builder, has engaged in predatory loan practices. These include imposing exorbitant interest and penalties and forcing borrowers to surrender properties. Subsequently, these properties are reportedly sold to the builder at throwaway prices, bypassing legitimate bidding processes.
This raises serious questions about the misuse of banking powers, the exploitation of borrowers, and the lack of accountability within MCC Bank’s management.
Growing Demands for Justice
Pereira’s tragic death has ignited calls for a comprehensive CBI and ED probe into MCC Bank’s activities and Lobo’s alleged role in financial exploitation. Social activists and community leaders are demanding an in-depth investigation to uncover the extent of malpractice and provide justice to Pereira and others who have been similarly affected.
The Way Forward With mounting public outrage, authorities are under pressure to ensure a transparent investigation. Pereira’s death is not just an isolated incident but a symptom of broader systemic issues in MCC Bank’s management. The truth behind these allegations must be unveiled, and those responsible must be held accountable to restore faith in the banking system.
The spotlight is now on law enforcement and judicial authorities to ensure that Pereira’s death does not go in vain and that affected borrowers receive justice.
