Introduction of a new and revolutionary treatment for Parkinson’s disease by Nanavati Super Specialty Hospital in December 2018 has shown encouraging and positive results. The new Apomorphine Pen & Pump treatment has radically changed the life of a Parkinson’s patient. The treatment gave a near normal-active life to a 50-years old Aeronautical engineer and stage artist who can now perform his day to day activities under the medication.
Nanavati Super Specialty Hospital successfully tested this revolutionary new modality of treatment for Parkinson’s on Indian patients. Currently seven patients, who are being treated with the Apo GO Pen injection treatment are showing very heartening results.
According to experts, Apomorphine is a highly selective Dopamine receptor stimulator, which promotes the release of dopamine in the brain from the nerve cells that is otherwise absent.
Sharang Pandit, 50, an Aeronautical Engineer and Stage Show artist, is one of the first Parkinson’s patient who underwent this treatment at Nanavati. He feels his life has taken an upward direction after the usage.
“I was very disappointed with my condition and never thought I would be able to lead a normal life again. But my will to make a change was always there. I have recently invented a Harmonium which can be played by person with disability or a Parkinson’s patient like me,” says Pandit.
“For me, it is an incredible treatment. Before this I was leading almost handicapped life for last 16 years. This revolutionary treatment gives new hope to thousands of people like me who are suffering from Parkinson’s. It should be available to everyone in the country. I want to thank Nanavati Hospital and everyone involved in the process,” adds Pandit.
Dr. Ali Irani, Head of Department, Physiotherapy and Sport Medicine “There is less awareness of Parkinson’s in India. The medication available does not assure the patients with near normal life. Apomorphine works wonders for the patients. The Apo GO pen is a phenomenal treatment that can benefit many suffering from Parkinson’s in India”
Dr. Vinod Metta, Movement Disorders Specialist from London, UK says, “Our team has put in a lot of efforts to bring the medicine to India and seeing the results now is promising. Apo GO pen treatment worked dramatically giving benefits to patients within couple of minutes. Watching Mr. Sharang Pandit walk, run and then eventually do yoga was reassuring.”
Currently, this treatment is only available at Nanavati Hospital. One dosage lasts for two hours and the patient can walk, run and do regular chores without any assistance. Parkinson’s disease is one of the common neurodegenerative disease affecting the people of all ages. Parkinson’s is characterized by slowness, stiffness and tremors is a special neurodegenerative disorder with very few therapeutic options available. It is caused by dopamine deficiency which is a chemical neuro transmitter in the brain mainly in the centers controlling the mobility.
